1. CCleaner - The first step in making our computers faster is to download CCleaner. In a previous post I mentioned this utility. In case you didn’t read it here is what CCleaner can do. CCleaner can delete all of your temporary files, clean and fix your registry, delete programs faster, get rid of start up programs amongst others. Just download this program and use it. This program is very self explanatory. You can check out CCleaner here.
2. Windows ReadyBoost – This is a utility that Windows Vista and Windows 7 contains that allows you to add, in theory, extra RAM to your computer. When you put in a USB thumb drive into your computer and right click on it then click open Autoplay and click the ReadyBoost option in the window. You then can either use the entire drive or just part of it to use as extra RAM. Your computer will then use this space as RAM which will in turn speed up on your computer.
3. Soluto - This is a program the allows you to easily manage your start up programs. It has a very nice interface that shows how long your computer takes to boot and how you can improve it. It gives you the option of delaying the program until the computer is idle or just have it not run at all. I had this program reduce my boot time from around 3 minutes to around 90 seconds it just a few moments. You can visit Soluto’s Website for more info.
4. Disk Defragmenter – The good old fashioned defrag. If you don’t what it means to defrag your hard drive it is when a program takes all the scattered files on your hard disk and puts it into one place making it easier to access the files. If the files were all scattered around the disk it would take longer to access them and thus make your computer slower. If you have a Windows machine you can use a preloaded program called Disk Defragmenter to defrag your hard drive. You can access this program by Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Just follow the on screen instructions. This may take a while so sit tight.
If you follow these suggestions I am sure you will see a marked increase in your computer speed. If you want to keep of your fast computer speed than repeat these steps every time you see your computer slow down. If your computer is so slow that you struggle to keep your sanity than it may be time to toss it.
