iOS 4 runs like crap on the iPhone 3G. It’s so bad in fact that my article on downgrading the iPhone 3G from iOS 4 back to iPhone OS 3.1.3 has been one of the most popular in the last few weeks. Now a quick tip from iPhone hacker Comex may save you from having to do that by making your iPhone 3G run like it should on Apple’s shiny new OS.
Apparently Comex found an article on the ModMyi forums that showed that the slowdowns of the iPhone 3G on iOS 4 are largely due to the indexing performed by the Spotlight Search function, which lets you search the entire contents of your iPhone. Turning this off yields major improvements in speed and stability for iPhone 3G users.
To turn off Spotlight search, go to Settings>General>Home Button>Spotlight on iOS 4.0.1 or Settings>General>Spotlight on iOS 4.0 and disable each of the indexing services (no check boxes).
Note that this is for iPhone 3G only!
I tried this on a friends 3G and it seemed to help, couldn’t hurt that’s for sure! Let me know if you try this and notice a significant bump in speed on your 3G!
