Send/receive text messages from your PC using MightyText

MightyText is a service that is currently in beta. Its purpose is simple. It allows you to send a receive text messages from your computer. MightyText also uses your existing mobile number and contacts to streamline the process. It can be restrictive, but it does work and can be very convenient for people who stay glued to their computer.

The only way to try MightyText is to sign up for the beta on its website. Before you sign up, make you meet the two major requirements. You must have an Android phone running Android 2.2 or higher and use the Google Chrome web browser. Chrome is required because you have to download a Chrome extension for everything to work. Other requirements include signing up using the same email address that is associated with your phone’s Google account.

Here’s how MightyText works after everything is set up. Whenever you are sent a text message, a notification pops up at the bottom right of your computer screen. At that point, you can choose to respond to those texts right from your computer. You can also send messages to anyone on your contact list.

MightyText just makes creating and responding to text messages quicker. If you get a text while on the computer, you have to stop what you’re doing, pick up your phone and answer it. Sometimes a simple text can turn into a full blown texting conversation. Being able to conduct that conversation without taking your eyes off the computer screen is very convenient.

You’re still paying for the texts you receive based on the plan you’ve set up with your wireless carrier.

There are still some things to be desired from MightyText. The user interface leaves a lot to be desired and you can’t send picture messages either. Another pet peeve of mine is that my phone’s notification light continues to blink as the messages build up. In the end, you’ll still have to manually check your phone’s messages to remove the notification.
