The modern war in mobile companies will be definitely between brands like Apple, HTC, Nokia and not to mention Samsung. Samsung and HTC will be the biggest competitors after Apple and Samsung. Well, that’s the talk about future but it seems that the war between HTC and Samsung is underway.
Both the companies launched cheap Smartphone named as HTC Explorer and Samsung Galaxy Y in the month of October. Both the phones are attracting lots of young people because of the heavy yet fast features they have.
Now let us see what happens when these weapons of war will face each other in a final showdown! So, let’s begin the HTC Explorer vs Samsung Galaxy Y.
Form Factor
Both the phones are quite small in size. HTC Explorer is a bit longer than Samsung Galaxy Y while Samsung Galaxy Y is bit slimmer than HTC Explorer. The dimensions of HTC Explorer are 102.8 x 57.2 x 12.9 mm, on the other hand, the dimensions of Samsung Galaxy Y are 104 x 58 x 11.5 mm. Weight of HTC Explorer is 108grams while the weight of Samsung Galaxy Y is merely 97.5grams. Both the phones are fitted with TFT capacitive touchscreen.
Winner – HTC Explorer
Processor
Samsung Galaxy Y – 830Mhz Armv6 processor
HTC Explorer – 600MHz Cortex A5 processor
Clearly, there is a lot of difference between the clock speed of these two phones. Samsung Galaxy Y’s processor is 230MHz more than that of HTC Explorer. HTC Explorer though is having a poor processor but still it is really fast, but still not, not faster than Samsung Galaxy Y. GPU of Samsung Galaxy Y is unknown while the HTC Explorer is having Adreno 200 GPU.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Y
Display
Display of both these phones is damn awesome. Samsung Galaxy Y is a 3.0inch phone with TFT capacitive touchscreen. The pixel density of Samsung Galaxy Y is 133ppi which indeed is poor. On the other hand HTC Explorer is having a larger display of 3.2inches with good pixel density – 180ppi. So the winner of this catalog is clear.
Winner – HTC Explorer
Camera
Camera quality matters for young people and for the people who are interested a lot in photography. HTC Explorer is having a 3.15MP primary camera with features like face detection, geo-tagging etc. On the other hand Samsung Galaxy Y is having a 2MP primary camera with almost same features. There is no secondary camera in both the devices. We can shoot videos in QVGA format from Samsung Galaxy Y while the video quality of HTC Explorer is a lot better, we can record 480p videos from it.
Winner – HTC Explorer
Operating System
Talking about operating systems is my favorite part, but it gets completely ruined when both the operating systems are same. Yes, HTC Explorer and Samsung Galaxy Y are having same OS, even the version of OS is same. Both the phones are having Android v.2.3(Gingerbread). Gingerbread is an amazing operating system.
Winner – Tie
Data Connectivity
Data needs to be transferred from one place to another, and to transfer data we need some features which are called data connectivity features. HTC Explorer and Samsung Galaxy Y are having exactly same features! They have EDGE, WLAN, GPRS, Bluetooth v3.0, microUSB v2.0 and 3G on HSDPA 900 / 2100 bands. As I have mentioned that the data connectivity features are same, so we can’t just compare them.
Winner – Tie
Memory
Memory helps in storing the data. The larger the memory is, the larger the data we can store. Samsung Galaxy Y is having 180MB internal memory, 290MB RAM, the expandable memory is 32GB. On the other hand HTC Explorer is having merely 90MB internal memory, 512MB RAM expandable memory is 32GB. There is not a lot of difference between the internal memories, but a lot of difference between RAM, RAM must always be preferred over memory.
Winner – HTC Explorer
Battery
HTC Explorer – Standard battery, Li-Ion 1230 mAh
Samsung Galaxy Y – Standard battery, Li-Ion 1200 mAh
The power of the battery might seem low but actually when it comes to practical, Samsung Galaxy Y is having an upper hand. Samsung Galaxy Y’s battery keeps it alive for 850hrs on 2G standby, 540hrs standby on 3G. HTC Explorer’s battery keeps it alive for 485hrs on 2G and 445hrs on 3G. There is a huge difference between these two phones when it comes to battery.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Y
Price
HTC Explorer – Rs.11,199
Samsung Galaxy Y – Rs.7,490
As you all can see there is fairly a good difference between the prices of these two phones. HTC Explorer is priced at almost Rs.3,800 more than Samsung Galaxy Y. Both the phones are fairly priced, but if features and price are rationalized I think Samsung Galaxy Y is better than HTC Explorer.
Winner – Samsung Galaxy Y
Final Verdict
If you want a bit more features for Rs.3,800 then you can surely go with HTC Explorer but if you want cheap, and powerful phone then you can go with Samsung Galaxy Y. Samsung Galaxy Y is even better in case of battery, and processor and has almost similar features in case of memory, operating systems, camera quality etc. If I had to choose between these two, I would have definitely gone with Samsung Galaxy Y.
Thank you for the great review. I must go with Samsung. Samsung Galaxy Y is a great phone and it really doesn't matter if HTC has better features. I still love Samsung.
